Athelstone Football Club announces that A-Grade Coach Matt Knight will step down at the end of the season due to growing work and family commitments.When “Knighta” took the reins, the club was coming off a tough Division 2 Elimination Final loss. Over the last three seasons, his leadership completely transformed our trajectory. He led us to a Preliminary Final in 2024, a Grand Final appearance in 2025, and secured our hard-earned promotion to Division 1 for 2026. Despite a challenging run with injuries this year, the boys fought it right out, with a chance of finals still in play until round 16, which consolidates our spot in Division 1 in 2027.Beyond the wins, Knighta brought immense professionalism, deep football knowledge, and a valuable network that strengthened the club off the field. More importantly, he is a thoroughly respected clubman, mate, and leader to our players, volunteers, and supporters.
While we are sad to see him step down, everyone at Athelstone is incredibly grateful for his immense contribution. We wish Matt, Stacey, and Hallie the absolute best, and we look forward to seeing the Knight family cheering the Raggies on in the future. Matt shares the following message with everybody involved at Raggies. “My time at Athelstone FC is one I will cherish forever. To Stephen Young and the AFC Board, thank you for giving me the opportunity to coach this great club. To all the support staff, volunteers and supporters who backed us every week, thank you for making the past three years so memorable for my family and I. The lifelong friendships I’ve made at this footy club are something I will never forget or take for granted. To the playing group, thank you for the past three years. It’s been an absolute blast coaching you boys week in, week out. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together. And to my wife Stacey and daughter Hallie, thank you for all your love and support and for allowing me to do what I love each week. I love this club and its people, and I wish everyone nothing but the best for the future. I’ll be cheering you on and following the results every week.
